The Corruption of Charity

10/4/13, by Clement Pulaski

"Now abideth faith, hope, charity (agape), these three; but the greatest of these is charity."
-1 Corinthians 13:13

"Beloved, let us love one another: for love (agape) is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."
-1 John 4:7-8

In our ongoing attempt to walk the straight and narrow path we encounter the snares of Satan laid for us in every direction. As soon as we escape from one sin we are tempted to commit another. Once a Christian leaves behind the sins of the flesh, Satan tries to draw him into the sin of pride; once the spread of the Gospel ended the practice of pagan idolatry in much of the world, Satan introduced Islam, a religion that forbids the use of idols but is just as carnal minded as the old paganism. The subtlety of the deceiver is so great that in his attempts to draw us from salvation he has even corrupted our concepts of "love" and "charity".

The words "love" and "charity" are both used to translate the Greek word "agape" found in the New Testament. As the above quoted passages show, "agape" is an indispensable element of the Christian life. "Charity" is derived from the Latin word for love, "caritas", which is used in Latin translations of the New Testament. The more limited use of the word "charity" signifying material aid given to the poor grew out of the broader Christian virtue of Love. This Christian compassion for the less fortunate infuriates Satan because it is a manifestation not only of Love but of Humility. Satan encourages prideful feelings of superiority and disdain for those less fortunate, because these feelings can easily draw us from repentance. A man who thinks of himself as superior will find it more difficult to humble himself before God and fully confess his sins. Apart from God we are nothing, and when we think highly of ourselves and believe that we have our own, independent goodness, we are separated from God. Love and Humility are the great weapons against pride, and rendering charitable service to those of a lower worldly standing is one of the best ways to put Love and Humility into action.

But when Satan is foiled in his efforts to drive men away from charitable acts, he then attempts to corrupt these very acts and stain them with sin. This corruption of charity was already a danger in the time of Jesus:

Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
-Matthew 6:2-4

Once a society or sub-culture accepts that charitable giving is praiseworthy, certain individuals will engage in charitable giving solely for the purpose of gaining worldly praise.

It is in recent years, however, that Satan has devised more insidious means of corrupting charity, cloaking under the name of charity the promotion of vice, social chaos and treason. "Charitable" institutions, both public and private, that supposedly help the poor actually promote idleness and welfare abuse. Liberals flood our lands with third-world immigrants and refugees out of "compassion", when in truth this phenomenon merely results in the destruction of Western nations, the traditional bearers of Christianity. These same liberals also promote state-enforced racial integration and a soft justice system which has resulted in the rape and murder of innocents and the transformation of once flourishing neighborhoods into "no-go zones". Christians who oppose the immigrant invasion or state-enforced wealth redistribution are labelled as "uncharitable" hypocrites acting out of greed and "hatred".

The broader concept of "love" has been corrupted in the same way as the concept of "charity", and this corrupted definition of "love" is used to promote acceptance of the basest perversions. The recent agitation for sodomite marriage and sodomite adoption has been done in the name of love, and Christians opposed to these abominations are labeled as "haters". Satan's deception is so successful that many supposed Christians have come to embrace this perverse new understanding of love, and now teach that those who oppose sodomy risk eternal damnation.

We live in a world so ensnared by falsehood that "love" is used to justify the destruction of all moral and social order. Year after year the policies of the godless result in more death and misery, but their blindness prevents them from seeing the error of their ways. Their false idea of "love" is in reality the hatred of God's law, and in the face of this confusion we must keep firm in our hearts the true meaning of Love. Love is not about self-fulfillment or self-gratification, nor are any other of the Christian virtues. Christian Love is a desire to serve one's fellow man, a desire kindled by obedience to God. But this service must be centered on God's law and include an effort to bring unrepentant sinners to accept this law. If someone's definition of "love" is at variance with God's law, it is counterfeit.

The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
-Psalm 19:7-10

The heart of a liberal aches when it sees inequality of economic or social conditions; the heart of the Christian lover aches when he sees his fellow man living in sin and rejecting the Word of God, regardless of his wealth or social position. The Christian grieves when his brother is cut off from God's life giving grace, showing that his Love is wholly spiritual.
That this true Love be granted to us and to our enemies, we pray to the Lord.
